Glamorgan drew with Cardiff MCCU at the SWALEC Stadium as the students ended on 144/6 chasing a target of 348 runs to win in what proved to be 56 overs on the final afternoon of the three-day contest.
The overnight pair of Marcus North and Stewart Walters duly resumed with the scoreboard on 113/2, with the former soon into his stride, clipping Matthew Hobden to the boards at long-leg before driving him through the covers. He then turned his attention to Phil Harris who was exquisitely driven to long-off for another sweetly-timed four, before Walters opened his account for the morning with a booming cover drive followed by a ferocious square-cut, each against Hobden. The tall seamer was then steered through backward point by North, but in his seventh over of the morning he made the breakthrough as he induced an inside edge from Walters' bat which ricocheted into the stumps as the third wicket fell with Glamorgan on 156.
Gareth Rees announced his arrival at the crease by pulling Hobden for four behind square before drilling Denning through extra cover. But with the total on 165 Hobden then trapped North leg before for 28 as Jim Allenby emerged from the pavilion to join Rees. He also announced his arrival with a coruscating cover drive for four as Glamorgan's lead approached the 300-mark. This was duly reached as Rees slashed Denning through backward point for another boundary, with Allenby celebrating in successive deliveries by lofting Andrew Salter firstly to long-on and then fiercely scything him to the ropes at extra cover .
Glamorgan continued batting for a further 25 minutes after lunch with Jim Allenby bringing up the fifty stand for the fifth wicket with Gareth Rees by glancing Scott Phillips to the ropes at long-leg before guiding him through the vacant fourth slip position for another deft boundary. Rees then drove Scott Phillips through extra cover for four before Allenby hoisted Andrew Balbirnie over deep mid-wicket for six. The declaration duly came when Glamorgan lost their fifth wicket as Rees was caught at slip by Balbirnie to give Salter his second wicket of the match.
With a maximum of three and a half hours remaining, Fabian Cowdrey and Zac Elkin opened the batting for the students with Chris Cooke also keeping wicket in place of Mark Wallace. Cowdrey survived an lbw shout and a run-out chance off the first ball of the innings from Huw Waters. Zac Elkin though met with less good fortune as in Mike Reed's second over, and with the total on 6, he was caught behind by Cooke.
The assured-looking Cowdrey responded by securing a pair of crisply struck fours against Waters, who was also cover driven by Uzi Qureshi who next over drilled Reed to long-off. John Glover then entered the attack in place of Waters, and in his second over he nearly bowled Cowdrey who got a faint inside edge onto the ball which then squirted away to the ropes at fine-leg. Waters switched to the River End and was despatched through extra cover by Qureshi as the second wicket pair played with freedom.
Their jaunty stand though was ended - with the total on 60 - by some smart fielding at mid-wicket by Rees who after diving to stop the ball sent an arrow-like return back to Cooke who removed the bails with Qureshi out of his ground after being sent back by his partner. Cowdrey then struck Glover for two fours in the space of three balls as he completed a 56-ball half-century shortly before the tea interval
Andrew Salter defiantly on-drove Dean Cosker for two fours, whilst Adam Miles also despatched Allenby through the covers for four before steering Huw Waters to the vacant third man boundary. The final hour began with Cardiff MCCU on 114/5 after 36 overs with Waters returning to the attack hopeful of making further incisions. Miles twice edged him to third man but Salter was less fortunate against the seamer from Usk as Allenby pouched a regulation catch at first slip as the students subsided further to 127/6.
Miles and Phil Harris stoutly defended as John Glover also had another trundle at the Cathedral Road End, but with eight overs remaining, the players shook hands as the game ended in a draw at 5.45pm
