A defiant century by Gareth Rees saw Glamorgan draw their LV=County Championship match at Old Trafford as Simon Kerrigan nearly proved to be the Welsh county's nemesis yet again as the left-arm spinner, who had taken five wickets in Lancashire's victory at Colwyn Bay returned figures of 5/90 on a dramatic final afternoon.
Procter ended the sequence by drilling Wagg through extra cover for four before Cross brought up the fifty stand by square-cutting Glover. Glamorgan then switched to an all-spin attack with Nathan McCullum ending Procter's innings as he bowled him off his pads with his first delivery of the day. 461/6 then became 463/7 as four balls later the Kiwi trapped Kyle Hogg leg before as he propped half forward.
Glen Chapple duly came in and reverse-swept the New Zealander before pulling Cosker for four as Lancashire went into the lead. He celebrated by again reverse-sweeping Cosker before harpooning McCullum over long-on for six, and the 500 soon followed as the Red rose captain continued to use the long handle. But his merry spree ended with the total on 510 as he advanced down the wicket to Cosker and was stumped by Mark Wallace.
Arron Lilley came in for his first-ever Championship innings and also swung lustily for a pair of fours against the spinners before nearly miscuing a lofted drive to McCullum at mid-on before Cross completed his fifty from 92 balls. He then pulled Cosker for six as the Red Rose county approached their highest-ever Championship total against Glamorgan made back in 1938 when they made 564/9dec.
But with the total on 558 Wallace stumped Cross as he advanced down the track in a bid to deposit Cosker into the old pavilion, and it was successive fours by Lilley against McCullum which saw Lancashire past this 75 year-old record. But a couple of balls later McCullum ended the innings as Alex Jones took a good running catch at deep mid-wicket to end Kerrigan's brief stay as Lancashire's innings ended on the stroke of lunch.
The spinners Simon Kerrigan and Arron Lilley soon entered the fray in a bid to make inroads but Rees cover drove Kerrigan before lofting him over long-on for six followed by a pull to the ropes at square-leg as the fifty came up in the 16th over. Rees then deftly leg-glanced Lilley for four before reverse-sweeping Kerrigan but with the total on 66 Bragg was snared at short-leg as he played forward to Kerrigan.
Murray Goodwin duly joined Rees who continued his assault on Kerrigan by sweeping him to the ropes at square-leg as he completed a 73-ball half-century. Goodwin then opened his account by twice sweeping Lilley for four to mid-wicket before Rees yet again reverse swept Kerrigan. But with the total on 88, Kerrigan struck again as Goodwin edged to first slip where Ashwell Prince completed the catch.
There were a few early scares as Rees was nearly caught at short-leg from Kerrigan's second delivery of the session, whilst his partner nearly departed in similar fashion in Arron Lilley's second over of the session. Rees responded by again reverse-sweeping the left-arm spinner before Andrea Agathangelou had a brief spell with his leg-breaks at the Pavilion End.
But the sixth wicket pair remained defiant and forced Glan Chapple into making another change as the Red Rose skipper himself returned at the Statham End, whilst Kerrigan switched ends. McCullum, drawing on his international experience remained resolute, and steered a short ball from Chapple through backward point for four whilst Rees reverse-swept Kerrigan yet again.
Lilley then replaced Chapple as Lancashire continued to strive to find a way of making a breakthrough. Rees then unfurled a booming cover drive against Kerrigan before clipping the spinner through backward point to complete an invaluable century for his side, from 155 balls. McCullum then drilled Lilley to long-on as the final hour started with Glamorgan on 180/5
A further two overs were bowled before the teams shook hands with Glamorgan on 183/5 after 60 overs.
