What to do in Cardiff
Cardiff, the Capital City, is the perfect gateway to the history, culture, language and landscapes of Wales. The sounds of the City are a mixture, with two languages - one shared with many in the world, and another, ancient, tongue with Celtic and Latin roots, that belongs to Wales. The language sets the scene for a City of contrasts, where the innovative architecture of the Millennium Stadium and the Wales Millennium Centre sit alongside the 2000-year-old grandeur of Cardiff Castle.
With the capital and its welcoming hotels, bars and restaurants as a base, visitors can explore the best that Wales has to offer. Cardiff Bay, the city's revitalised dockland area, is now one of Europe's most exciting waterfront developments, with a thriving leisure quarter. Dominating the Bay skyline is the Wales Millennium Centre, home to seven arts organisations, including the world renowned Welsh National Opera. Add to that Cardiff's reputation as the home of Welsh Rugby, with the finest covered Stadium in the Northern Hemisphere, and you have a cocktail to meet all the demands of the discerning traveller.
Plenty of shopping can also be squeezed in between visits to the attractions, with pedestrianized streets, undercover malls and a network of arcades.
Shopping
Cardiff's city centre shopping experience has been transformed since the opening of the St. David's Shopping Centre development. Here you will find a whole host of leading shops and restaurants all under one roof. The department store John Lewis has its largest store outside of London in the brand new building in the Hayes area of the city. Cardiff also has a number of stunning boutiques in the many Victorian and Edwardian arcades that link the city's main shopping streets. Only a short walk from the Stadium, Cardiff city centre is fast becoming the leading European retail destination.
Cardiff Bay
A 10-minute journey south of the centre using either the hop-on hop-off tour bus, direct 'Bendybus' or by train, is Cardiff Bay, where you will find the Wales Millennium Centre and a wide range of high quality restaurants, bars and other tourist attractions.
Cardiff Bay is also home to the Doctor Who Experience, where visitors can see monsters, costumes and props from the BBC Wales series - much of which was filmed in and around Cardiff, and the area is one of the main settings for the BBC's adult Doctor Who spin off - Torchwood - which has broadcast Cardiff Bay to a global TV audience.
