Glamorgan ended the second day of their LV=County Championship match against Worcestershire at New Road on 164/5, trailing the home side by 341 runs.
Hogan - the country's leading wicket-taker with 39 scalps to his name - duly resumed the bowling at the Diglis End as Moeen clipped the fifth ball of the day to the ropes at mid-wicket to complete a career-best in first-class cricket. Shantry also found the ropes in Jim Allenby's opening over before Moeen twice cover drove Hogan as Glamorgan strove to secure another bowling point before the end of the 110th over.
But it was Worcestershire who secured the next point as they reached 350 with a nurdle by Moeen through backward point before Shantry celebrated by using the long handle against Allenby, scything him through the covers and long-off for fours from consecutive balls, before more deftly cutting the all-rounder to the vacant third man boundary.
Will Owen then replaced Hogan at the Diglis End as the fourth wicket pair completed their fifty stand before yet another edge just dropped short of the slip cordon as Shantry prodded at Owen before rubbing salt into the wounds by slashing the next delivery through backward point to the short boundary in front of the construction site adjacent to the entrance from New Road.
With the home side on 371/3 after 110 overs, Mike Reed entered the attack with Shantry continuing in his rustic style, whilst Moeen crisply pulled Owen for four to long-leg. But with the total on 391 Cosker returned at the Diglis End and with his third ball he ended Shantry's quixotic innings and the night-watchman speared a ball back into his hands.
His departure prompted the clatter of wickets as next over Alexei Kervezee drilled Reed straight into Murray Goodwin's hands at cover as Worcestershire lost their fifth wicket on 396, and three balls later it became 397/6 as Championship debutant Tom Fell departed leg before to Cosker as he lunged forward to his first delivery.
But Moeen continued to move towards a maiden double-hundred as Ben Cox brought up the 400 by pulling Cosker for four to mid-wicket, and next over Moeen danced down the wicket to the spinner and reached his landmark in the grand manner with a six over extra cover.
Three overs later, Moeen secured another four to third man from Mike Reed's bowling taking his total past Graeme Hick's 219* at Neath in 1986 leaving just the former England batsman's total of 252* at Abergavenny in 1990 as the solitary higher individual score for Worcestershire against Glamorgan in the County Championship. He then had a stroke of good fortune as a thick inside-edge against Reed evaded the outstretched gloves of Mark Wallace, before later in the over Cox on-drove the tall bowler for another boundary.
Moeen then drove Reed for another four whilst Cox clattered the pace bowler through the covers as for only the third time in their history, Worcestershire approached the 500-mark in a Championship match against the daffodil county with Moeen pulling Ben Wright for six before scoring a single which took him to 250, but next over his innings ended as he lofted Cosker to long-on where Reed completed a fine running catch.
Joe Leach then clubbed a boundary to take his side to 500 before shortly afterwards Daryl Mitchell declared with his side on 505/7 - their third highest total in the Championship against Glamorgan, surpassed by the totals of 514/4 at Abergavenny in 1990 and 506/5 at Worcester in 1934.
Wright then began Glamorgan's reply by spanking Alan Richardson's first delivery through extra cover for four before Will Bragg did the same to Chris Russell when he began at the Diglis End. Wright also despatched Richardson through backward point for four but in his next over, the veteran seamer made the initial breakthrough as Bragg was caught behind by Ben Cox with Glamorgan on 13.
Stewart Walters began with a cover drive and a thick edge through the slips, but with the total on 25 he miscued the first ball from Jack Shantry with the ball appearing to lob via bat and pad to Matt Pardoe at short mid-wicket. Marcus North soon found his bearings as he guided Russell to the third man ropes, whilst after a period of careful reconnaissance deftly guided Shantry to the ropes at long-leg.
Murray Goodwin duly joined North and steered Shantry through backward point before his partner cover drove Richardson for another four. But the wily old seamer added another victim to his seasonal tally as Goodwin edged into wicket-keeper Ben Cox's gloves.
North responded with a brace of fours to the leg-side boundary in Shantry's next over before Jim Allenby drilled Richardson to the ropes at long-off. North then greeted the return of Chris Russell into the attack by steering him to third man for four but the bowler gained revenge in his next over as he re-arranged the Australian's stumps to leave Glamorgan reeling on 98/5.
Mark Wallace then joined Allenby who continued to drive assertively, despatching Russell to the extra cover boundary before doing the same to Joe Leach. Allenby then steered Leach backward of square through the off-side for another boundary before Wallace struck his first four by cutting Richardson as the pair chiselled away further at the sizeable deficit during the closing overs.
Allenby unleashed a booming off-drive against Richardson to complete a 67-ball fifty before in the pernultimnate over nearly lofting Moeen into the hands of long-on, but the all-rounder survived and Glamorgan fans will be looking for further resistance from him and his captain tomorrow as they strive to avoid before ask to follow-on.
