Glamorgan completed a comprehensive ten wicket victory before lunch after dismissing Worcestershire for 207 in just 10.1 overs on the final morning of their contest at the SWALEC Stadium as the visitors lost their last five wickets for just 21 runs.
In the subsequent 42 years, the Welsh county have not had a better chance than today of recording a victory at the Cardiff ground against the West Midlands side, who began the final day of the contest, in effect, on 14/5 and with the new ball just half a dozen overs away. Michael Hogan duly resumed at the Cathedral Road End with Jim Allenby at the River End as Thilan Samaraweera and Michael Johnson continued their sixth wicket partnership. The Sri Lankan began by firmly on-driving Hogan to the boundary boards, but three balls later the Australian clung onto a repeat of the shot as he grasped the ball with his right-hand out-stretched in his follow through to end Samaraweera's innings for 79 - the highest individual score of the match.
195/6 immediately became 195/7 as next over - the 80th of the innings - Johnson edged Allenby into the safe hands of Marcus North at first slip. The new ball was swiftly taken and Allenby was soon making further inroads as two runs later he uprooted David Lucas' middle stump, before two runs later he trapped Chris Russell leg before thereby completing a fine spell of 3/3 from a dozen balls.
Gareth Andrew responded by using the long handle to collect a pair of lusty fours as he heaved Hogan to long-on and then swatted him to the ropes at deep backward square-leg. The all-rounder then called for his Mongoose bat, but to the first ball with his new blade Andrew miscued Hogan to Marcus North at mid-off as Worcestershire were 207 all out.
This left Glamorgan needing just 36 runs to win and after a brace of firmly struck strokes by Ben Wright, it took the opening pair just 9.1 overs to see Glamorgan to their first Championship victory of the summer and their first Championship victory over Worcestershire at the Cardiff ground since 1971. With the Royal Horticultural Society's flower show starting in Bute Park, the daffodils are certainly blooming on the opposite bank of the Taff!
