Glamorgan's decision to bowl first in the overcast conditions at the SWALEC Stadium was fully vindicated as Worcestershire were dismissed for 123 on the opening day of this LV=County Championship encounter with Mike Reed taking 5/27 and Michael Hogan claiming 4/33 in a high-class performance of seam bowling.
After two maidens, Matt Pardoe got the scoreboard moving as he skewed a drive over the head of the slip cordon with the ball speeding away for the day's first boundary. A more convincing leg-glance against the tall Australian brought the opener another four in the next over, but it also led to his downfall as in the seventh over, the opener repeated the shot against Hogan only to send the ball into Ben Wright's safe hands at leg-slip.
13/1 saw Moeen Ali join his captain Daryl Mitchell with the pair making watchful progress as Jim Allenby entered the attack in the 12th over. The all-rounder was cut for four by Mitchell, before being leg-glanced to the ropes by Moeen before Mike Reed joined the attack at the River End and beat the outside edge of the bat on several occasions. Moeen guided the tall seamer to third man in the 22nd over to bring up the fifty, but five runs later the obdurate Mitchell was removed by Reed as Stewart Walters completed a good catch to his right at second slip.
55/2 became 56/3 as Thilan Samaraweera was trapped leg before by Hogan who had returned to the attack as Glamorgan secured their first bowling point shortly before the lunch interval.Next over, Hogan secured another scalp as Moeen spliced a short ball from the Australian into Wright's hands at leg-slip before next over Reed trapped Alexei Kervezee lbw.
Grahame Wagg and Jim Allenby returned to the attack after forty minutes play, with Gareth Andrew forcing Allenby off the back foot behind square. But this was a rare boundary as the visitors continued to be kept in check by the home bowlers with Allenby striking back in his next over as he bowled Pinner with the total on 85.
David Lucas then joined Andrew who continued to play watchfully, before Lucas aided Worcestershire's pursuit of three figures with a sparkling on-drive for four against Wagg before bringing up the hundred by steering Reed through gully for another four. This flurry of runs followed the only fielding lapse of the day as Dean Cosker dropped a difficult chance at backward point as Hogan returned to the fray but the bowler made amends as he re-arranged Andrew's stumps with Worcestershire on 102/8.
It then became 102/9 as Cosker atoned for his earlier lapse by catching Andrew at backward point to give Reed his fourth wicket. Chris Russell then smeared a couple of fours to the vacant third man position, before playing and missing at six consecutive deliveries from Reed who then polished off the innings by bowling the batsmen to finish with Championship-best figures of 5/27 as Worcestershire ended on 123 in the 64th over.
After their bowlers had taken just a couple of sessions to dismiss Worcestershire, Glamorgan's batsmen began after tea with Will Bragg and Ben Wright facing Alan Richardson and Chris Russell in gloomy conditions. Indeed, the light quickly deteriorated and after thirteen balls the umpires took the players off for bad light.
With the bank of cloud still hanging over the ground at 5.45pm, the umpires called off play for the day.
