The loss of eight wickets for 101 runs in 29.5 overs after lunch saw Glamorgan slip to a defeat by an innings and 25 runs shortly before tea on the third day of their LV=County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road as the East Midlands side secured another important victory in their quest for promotion into Division One.
Gareth Rees and Will Bragg duly opened the Glamorgan second innings as Trent Copeland and Willey looked to make early inroads. Bragg began by clipping Willey to square-leg before Rees unfurled a booming off-drive against the left-armer who responded by delivering a sharply rising delivery outside off-stump which Rees did very well to avoid. The opener then drilled another ball from Willey through the covers for four before Bragg nearly played Copeland onto his stumps.
Copeland though made the initial incision as Rees - with the total on 27 - got a thick outside edge which David Sales at second slip dived and clung onto inches above the turf. Murray Goodwin began with a crisp glance to the square-leg boundary against Willey but with the total on 33, he was adjudged l.b.w. to Copeland as the Australian struck again.
With Chris Cooke as his new partner, Bragg despatched Copeland off the back foot through backward point before drilling him off the front foot through extra cover. Cooke began with fours against Hall to third man and cover, before Bragg again despatched Copeland behind square on the off-side.
After an eleven-over spell, Steven Crook replaced Copeland and he too was despatched through cover by Bragg. Cooke then edged Mohammad Azharullah just short of slip before the fifty stand came up shortly before lunch.
Allenby got off the mark immediately by driving a full toss straight for four before Cooke clattered a short ball from Copeland through extra cover. Allenby then repeated the stroke against both Azharullah and Steven Crook, but next ball, the latter trapped Allenby l.b.w. as Glamorgan slipped to 120/4. Mark Wallace began by leg-glancing Azharullah for four but with the total on 134, Cooke edged a pull against the Pakistani and was caught behind the wicket.
Five balls later, Murphy pouched another scalp as Wallace edged Crook before Wagg biffed the bowler imperiously through mid-off and mid-on. But with the total on 143, John Glover became another victim for Murphy as the diving wicket-keeper pouched an edge against Azharullah. The combative Wagg continued to show defiance as he upper-cut the Pakistani for six before sending a ball from Crook speeding to the ropes at cover. He then greeted the return of Andrew Hall by pulling him to mid-wicket for four, but the veteran Springbok claimed the eighth wicket as Andrew Salter edged into Murphy's gloves with the keeper standing up - his ninth dismissal of the match equalling the record in Championship cricket against the Welsh county.
170/8 then became 177/9 as Cosker top-edged a pull against Copeland and was caught at long-leg by Crook before Mike Reed struck Hall to mid-wicket and long-leg for four. But in his next over Hall ended the game as Reed sparred a lifter into Copeland's hands at slip as Glamorgan ended on 187 to give the home side an innings victory.
