Glamorgan enjoyed the better of the opening day of their LV=County Championship match against Lancashire at Colwyn Bay, as John Glover and Michael Hogan each claimed three wickets apiece as the Red Rose county were dismissed for 123. In reply, the Welsh county were 110/4 at the close of play.
With the scoreboard reading 14/2, Ashwell Prince joined Procter who then found the ropes again as he punched Glover through extra cover. Procter added another couple of boundaries to his tally in the next over from Glover with the first off the middle to mid-wicket and the second off an edge to fine-leg. He then on-drove Hogan for four before Mike Reed and Jim Allenby bowled in tandem, with Prince deftly leg-glancing both of the change bowlers.
Prince saw Lancashire to the 50-mark as he on-drove Allenby for three, but the bowler then saw Glamorgan secure their first bowling point as he trapped Procter leg before. 54/3 swiftly became 54/4 as Reed also had an l.b.w. appeal upheld against Prince. The tall bowler nearly gained another scalp in his next couple of overs but a pair of edges from Steven Croft's bat evaded the expectant slip cordon. However, with the total on 66, Croft miscued a pull against Reed and Murray Goodwin took a good catch diving at snort mid-wicket.
Without further addition, Hogan removed Chapple who edged to Allenby at slip. Jimmy Anderson and Simon Kerrigan then offered some stout resistance, ekeing out twenty runs in a dozen overs until Marcus North, with his second ball, induced an edge from the latter with Allenby completing the catch at slip as Lancashire's innings ended on 123.
Will Bragg and Ben Wright then began Glamorgan's reply and watchfully guided the Welsh county to 7/0, with the former clipping Anderson to square-leg for four.
Bragg duly struck Anderson off the back foot through extra cover for four, before North off-drove and leg-glanced Kyle Hogg in successive balls. Bragg also nonchalantly on-drove Hogg to the ropes in front of the pavilion before steering Luke Procter through backward point to further whittle away at the deficit. But with the total on 82, Simon Kerrigan's spin was introduced and he ended Bragg's stay at the crease as another l.b.w. appeal was upheld.
Murray Goodwin duly joined North and immediately opened his account by cutting his first ball to the pavilion ropes. Anderson then returned at the Penrhyn Avenue and secured another l.b.w. victim as North departed for 22 as he propped forward to the England fast bowler. Jim Allenby then joined Goodwin and saw Glamorgan through to the close without any further alarms.
