Firstly, I'd like to thank all those who have already sent messages of congratulations following the announcement regarding my return to Glamorgan. It's a Club that's clearly close to my heart as a former player and team whose results I have always looked for as a follower these last 16 years.

I'm grateful to Glamorgan Chairman Barry O'Brien and the Committee who presented the opportunity to return to Glamorgan. It's an exciting challenge which I am really looking forward to and one I hope to tackle with energy, enthusiasm and relish.

I have had the benefit of 16 great years at the ECB and despite the many challenges, I have enjoyed every minute of it, particularly the last six years in my current role of managing director of England cricket. This has been a remarkable period in the history of cricket in England and Wales and I have been extremely proud to have been able to play a part in it. However, all good things come to an end, so this is an opportunity to hand the reins over to someone else.

I'm still employed by the ECB for the next 3 months and will be travelling out to Australia for the Ashes Series, and it would be wonderful to finish my time with the ECB on a high. Nonetheless I've had some early meetings with key members of staff at the Club, and in early October I met the entire administration team and other non-playing staff, as well as the players and coaches. I'm keen to increase my involvement in the coming weeks ahead of officially starting in January.

I enjoyed my time as a player with Glamorgan and now my task is to work with everyone at the club to increase our pool of talented players. First and foremost we are a cricket club and a very proud one, and I think it's important we make the Welsh nation proud of what we do on the field.

Performances are what we are judged by and looking from afar there have been some good improvements. We have some good players at the Club and I'm encouraged by that. However, we have got to develop our own talent. I was fortunate to play in a Glamorgan side the spine of which was Welsh. That's something I'll be focusing very hard on with the coaching staff.

At the time of writing, one of the first challenges is to make sure we have a Head Coach in place and we hope to confirm this appointment very soon as well as complete our final discussions with our playing squad ahead of next season.

As soon as I start, I'm going to speak to as many people as I can, including members, and spend a great deal of time listening. Once I have refreshed my understanding of the club, the priorities and objectives we face, both in the immediate and long term, we will then be ready to launch our plan, which I hope to present to members and other stakeholders ahead of the new campaign.

I am well aware that the Club, like many First-Class Counties, has faced financial difficulties in recent times and although we are now managing our debt, there are still many obstacles to overcome if we are to secure a future for the business. There is little doubt I will be taking up a challenging role, as the Club needs to significantly improve our performance on and off the field as we seek to increase revenue streams from all quarters. With your support, and with the quality we have within the organisation, I hope to lead us forward.

The 2014 fixtures are expected to be published in mid-November, so the countdown to the new season will begin in earnest. I look forward to seeing you at the SWALEC Stadium next year and thank you for your continued support for Glamorgan County Cricket Club.
