Over 75 people were present on Thursday evening in the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket at the SWALEC Stadium to listen to Don Shepherd, Glamorgan's leading wicket-taker, as he looked back on his magnificent playing career.
The man who took over 2,000 first-class wickets for the Welsh county spoke to the enraptured audience for over two hours, as he candidly recalled some of the great years of Glamorgan Cricket, including the back-to-back victories over the Australians in 1964 and 1968, as well as winning the Championship title in 1969.
After a short film presentation, recalling some of the highlights of his illustrious career Don spoke about how he began playing cricket in Port Eynon - his home on the Gower - through the encouragement of the local vicar, before progressing to the MCC Groundstaff at Lord's in 1948 and then a place on the Glamorgan staff.
During his talk, Don also recalled - with the help of a selection of superb photographs from the Club's archive - some of the great names in Glamorgan Cricket, including captains Wilf Wooller, Ossie Wheatley and Tony Lewis, batsmen Gilbert Parkhouse and Alan Jones, as well as his bowling partners Jim McConnon and Jim Pressdee, plus wicket-keepers Haydn Davies, David Evans and Eifion Jones.
He also spoke about his record-breaking innings against the 1961 Australians, racing to fifty within just 15 minutes, as well as never having had a batting net during his time with Glamorgan!
