A fifth wicket stand of 185 between Jim Allenby (105) and Murray Goodwin (96*) allowed Glamorgan to reach 318/5 at the close of the first day's play at Bristol after the Welsh county had been put in to bat in their LV=County Championship match against Gloucestershire
For Glamorgan, Dean Cosker returned to the side in place of Graham Wagg, as Will Bragg and Ben Wright opened the batting against James Fuller and another fresh-faced youngster, eighteen year-old Craig Miles. After a loud shout for leg before against Wright by fuller, Bragg clipped Miles to the leg-side ropes in his opening over, before Wright crisply cut a short ball through backward point as the over yielded a third boundary. The opener then did the same to Miles' next delivery before splicing a later delivery over the head of gully.
Bragg greeted the introduction of David Payne into the attack by steering the left-armer through extra cover before clipping Fuller to the square-leg boundary. But the switch of Miles to the Ashley Down End produced immediate dividends as the youngster induced an outside edge from Wright's bat which Gareth Roderick safely pouched. 36/1 then became 43/2 as in Miles' next over he had Bragg caught in the gully by Dan Housego.
A booming off-drive from Stewart Walters and a leg-glance for four by Marcus North saw Glamorgan past the fifty-mark, but six runs later, Payne switched to the Ashley Down End and had North caught behind as Gloucestershire claimed their first bonus point in the 19th over. Murray Goodwin duly joined Walters who unfurled a glorious cover drive for four against Graham McCarter shortly before lunch.
With Glamorgan on 85/4, Jim Allenby joined Goodwin who twice steered Miles to the offside boundary before his new partner unleashed a couple of rasping strokes through extra cover against Payne. Goodwin then clipped Benny Howell to mid-wicket for four before Allenby repeated the stroke against Payne as well as pulling Fuller for four. He continued to counter-attack as he then swatted the seamer square of the wicket before doing the same to Howell as the fifty partnership came up in just 33 minutes.
Allenby continued in assertive mode as he pulled Fuller for four high over the fielder at mid-wicket, and this flurry of runs duly led to the introduction of teenage spinner Miles Hammond at the Pavilion End. Allenby though continued to score freely as Goodwin continued his role as sheet anchor, and the all-rounder completed a 66-ball fifty by driving the schoolboy spinner through mid-off.
Allenby also pulled Miles for four before Goodwin deftly swept Hammond to the ropes at square-leg. The veteran then glanced McCarter to fine-leg as the century stand came up in the 60th over, before clipping the seamer to mid-wicket . He then reached his fifty - from 126 balls - as he cover drove Hammond with Glamorgan reaching 200/4 at tea.
The post-tea session began with Allenby - who scored an unbeaten 138 in the last match at Leicester - continuing his rich vein of form by swatting Payne for four to long-leg before drilling McCarter to the extra cover boundary. Goodwin also soon found the boundary ropes as he leg-glanced Payne before Miles Hammond returned to the attack as the home side tried to hurry through to the new ball. The runs though continued to come, in one's and two's as the pair cleverly worked the ball around and in the process brought up the 150-run stand.
Goodwin celebrated by pulling Hammond for four as Glamorgan secured a second batting point in the 78th over before Allenby drilled Benny Howell through extra cover, and another lofted drive against Hammond saw the all-rounder record his second century in succession as he struck his 15th four having faced 149 balls.
Gloucestershire then took the new ball but the runs continued to flow as Allenby cover drove Payne as the stand approached the Club record for that wicket against Gloucestershire set by Mike Powell and James Franklin at Cheltenham in 2006 when the pair added 188 to lay the foundation for a comprehensive victory. But three runs short of this landmark James Fuller ended their doughty efforts and Allenby's three-hour innings as he had an l.b.w. appeal upheld.
With Mark Wallace as his new partner, Goodwin steered Glamorgan to the 300-mark in the 90th over as he on-drove Fuller for four. Wallace then struck Hammond for two fours in the penultimate over before the watchful Goodwin ended the day on 96* and just four runs short of his first century - his first for his new employers and the 68th of his first-class career.
