Glamorgan defeated a star-studded Glamorgan Legends XI by 47 runs in an entertaining 20 overs match this afternoon at Abergavenny CC in aid of Mark Wallace's Benefit Year and in front of a decent-sized crowd at the picturesque ground.

Batting first Glamorgan made 191/7 in their innings against a bowling attack boasting some great names in the recent history of Glamorgan County Cricket Club, including Steve Watkin and Robert Croft. Indeed, the latter was the pick of the Legends attack with the old sorcerer taking 3/27 with his scalps including that of Matthew Mott who top-scored with 46. Wallace also posted a quick-fire 33 whilst Mike Reed struck a lusty 22 before becoming one of two victims for the canny spin of Ian Thomas.

Fittingly, the old firm of Hugh Morris and Steve James began the reply with the pair who were in the middle when Glamorgan won the County Championship at Taunton in 1997 adding 37 in five overs before James departed leg before to Ben Wright. Morris continued to unfurl some forceful blows, including his trademark drive square of the wicket on the offside and a lofted flick off his legs for six to long-leg.

But on 44 Morris' fluent innings ended as the man who led Glamorgan to the Sunday League title in 1993 drilled Dean Cosker straight into the hands of Huw Waters at mid-on. The Waters-Cosker combination also accounted for Mike Powell, back at his home club, before Mott's seam bowling accounted for Thomas as well as Legends captain Matthew Maynard as the man who in 1985 struck a hundred on his Glamorgan debut, miscued a drive to Cosker at mid-off.

Gary Butcher, another member of the 1997 Championship-winning squad, then made an unbeaten 35 before Wallace claimed the wickets of Adrian Shaw - his predecessor behind the stumps for the Welsh county - as well as that of David Harrison as the Legends ended on 144/8.
