Harry Powell, the 18 year-old seamer from Newport CC completed a record-breaking return of 6/8 as Glamorgan 2nd XI defeated the MCC Young Cricketers by four wickets in their Second Eleven Trophy match on the Isle of Wight.
The youngster's remarkable figures of 6.4-4-8-6 broke Owen Parkin's Club record of 6/31 against Warwickshire at Coventry in 1993 as the best in the one-day competition for the Welsh county. His efforts also prompted a dramatic collapse by the MCC side, as they collapsed from 122/2 to 157 all out in the 35th over.
An opening stand of 66 between captain Gareth Rees and Tom Lancefield then laid the foundations of Glamorgan's reply, and after the former had departed for 36, David Lloyd ensured that the visitor's remained on track by posting 38 as the Welsh county reached 160/6 after 34 overs.
It's not often that county cricketers take to the high seas to travel to a game, but this is precisely what the Glamorgan 2nd XI squad did on Sunday afternoon as they travelled by ferry across to the Isle of Wight ready to play matches in the course of the next few days against the MCC Young Cricketers at the picturesque Newclose ground, situated on the centre of the island and to the south of Newport.
The ground, which was developed six years ago, will be the second venue on the Isle of Wight at which Glamorgan have played, having met Hampshire in a County Championship match at Cowes in June 1960. In that contest over forty years ago, a fine 110 by opening batsman Gilbert Parkhouse allowed the Welsh county to assemble a decent first innings lead, before a rearguard action by Hampshire in their second innings saw the game end all square.
After their victory today, Glamorgan meet the MCC Young Cricketers in three-day Second Eleven Championship match following on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
